How To Know If Your Extra Test Strips Are Still Worth Money
Most people overestimate what their old test strips are worth, and underestimate how fast they lose value. Three things decide it: seal, expiration date, and brand. Run those three checks before you spend any time looking for a buyer.
Check 1: Is the box still sealed?
If the factory seal on the box is broken, the strips can no longer be resold, and almost no buyer will touch them. This is the fastest filter — open the closet, look at the boxes, set aside everything that is still sealed.
Check 2: How far out is the expiration date?
Look at the bottom or side of the box. Most buyers want at least six months of shelf life remaining. Inside six months and the offer drops fast. Inside three months and most buyers say no.
Check 3: Is it a brand people actually use?
Strips are not interchangeable — they only work with the matching meter. The brands that sell quickly are the ones with the largest installed user base: OneTouch Verio, OneTouch Ultra, Accu-Chek Guide, FreeStyle Lite, Contour Next, plus CGM products like Dexcom G6 / G7, FreeStyle Libre 2 / 3, and Omnipod.
Off-brand or generic store-brand strips usually have very little resale value because the meters are cheap and people just buy fresh strips at the store.
What to do once you have a "yes" pile
- Take a clear photo of the front of each box.
- Snap one photo of the expiration date and lot number.
- Text the photos to a local buyer for a real number — not a "we will tell you after you ship".
Frequently asked questions
Are expired test strips worth anything?
Realistically, no. Once strips pass the printed expiration date, no reputable buyer wants them, and using them yourself can give inaccurate readings. The honest answer is to recycle the box and not waste time looking for a buyer.
How much are 100-count boxes of test strips usually worth?
Pricing depends on brand, expiration, and condition. Sealed 100-count boxes of OneTouch Verio or FreeStyle Lite with 6+ months of shelf life typically pay between $20 and $40 per box at local cash buyback. Less popular brands pay less.
Do CGM sensors (Dexcom, Libre) hold value the same way?
CGM sensors hold value better than most strips because demand is high. Sealed Dexcom G6 / G7 sensor 3-packs and FreeStyle Libre 2 / 3 boxes are the most in-demand items we see right now.
Can I sell strips with a pharmacy label on the box?
No. A pharmacy label means the supplies were dispensed under prescription, which makes them ineligible for resale. Stick to clean retail boxes.
